Bioprofile

Born in Athens in 1955. He studied Economics at the University of Athens, and holds a Master in Business Administration (MBA) from INSEAD University in France. He speaks fluently English, French, Italian and Greek.

Currently he serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Shipping Company Star Bulk Carriers (NASDAQ listed SBLK) and Chairman of the Board of Euroclinic (a private hospital in Athens).

He has been President of the Athens Stock Exchange and CEO of the Hellenic Exchanges Group, President of the Federation of European Stock Exchanges, Executive Vice Chairman of the National Bank of Greece, Vice President of Bankers Trust Company with a 10 year banking career in Paris, New York, Milan and London, President of ETEVA and the Astir Insurance Company , CEO of OceanBulk Containers, CEO of Epirus SA (a dairy company), CEO of the Bank of Athens and served until recently as VP in the Board of GEK TERNA.

In 2021 he was elected President of the European Olympic Committees and in 2019 member of the International Olympic Committee. In 2025, during the 54th EOC General Assembly in Frankfurt, he was unanimously re-elected to lead the EOC for another four years and a few days later, during the 144th IOC Session in Greece he was elected to the IOC Executive Board (EB) as the member representing National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and will serve a four-year term from 2025 to 2029. He is Vice President of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) for Europe.He was also President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee from 2009 until 2025.

As an athlete he participated with the National Water Polo Team in the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980 and Los Angeles in 1984, while he was Greek and Balkan champion in swimming from 1969 to 1975.

He was Chairman of the Coordination Commission for the European Games in Baku (2015) and Minsk (2019), member of the Hellenic Olympic Committee (1992-1996) and Chef de Mission of the Greek Delegation to the Atlanta Olympic Games (1996). In addition, he was Member of the Board and Executive Director of the Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games "Athens 2004". In March 2004, he was appointed by the Prime Minister as General Secretary of State and City Manager of the Olympic Games Athens 2004.
